We learn so much in business school but when looking for a job later on, how can we prove we're capable of being socially astute, flexible, engaged and well functioning in a team? STAR is the answer and helps you to develop all of these in a diverse group of people, while sharpening your organizational skills as well. The best combination of internal growth and outward movement!
An African proverb says, "To be a star, you must shine your own light, follow your own path, and not worry about the darkness, for that is when the stars shine brightest". In our ever-expanding universe, new stars emerge every day. Is today your day?
The new STARs in this year's board are eager to start this year together with you and make the most out of every minute! We are looking forward to meet you!

Chairman
My name is
Marloes Hemmen and I am the Chairman of our beloved Study Association STAR.
Before taking up this great challenge, I completed my Bachelor Business
Administration in Nijmegen where I was active at Study Association Synergy and
went on exchange to Sweden. Last year I started the Master in Strategic
Management at the Rotterdam School of Management, which turned out to be a
great choice. After my board year, I plan to follow a second Master program (Finance
& Investments).
As Chairman, I am responsible for the overall coordination of the organization.
I'm also supervising the eleven Master Study Clubs. It is an exciting challenge
to maintain the legacy of 31 previous boards: to carry on the current track
while looking for new opportunities and possibilities to develop existing
initiatives further. It's fun and a good learning experience to work together
with inspiring people, and to provide members the possibility to develop
themselves in various ways: both by organizing activities and by participating
in them. Next to working for STAR, I enjoy travelling, reading a good book,
running and skiing. Along with my fellow board members, I'm looking forward to
have an exciting year with you and I hope to welcome you on board!
Laura Pool
Secretary
Hi, my name is Laura Pool and I am the secretary in the 32nd STAR Board. I am currently 19 years old and recently finished my second year of the International Business Administration Program. Born and raised in Rotterdam, I became active at STAR because I felt I needed a substitute for joining a fraternity. In my first year as an active member, I fulfilled the Commercial Relations function for International Week Holland, an exchange week for students from all over the globe. Last year I was responsible for the design of the program for the IBA Events Committee where we facilitated social events to enable IBA students to get to know their fellow students better. This year I found an amazing opportunity that permits me to broaden my organizational and social skills. As the Secretary, my main responsibility is the overall communication between STAR and its (active) members. Alongside STAR, my hobbies are playing field hockey, travelling and enjoying life with my friends. Together with my fellow Board members, I hope to make this year an exciting and fun year for everyone!
Wieger Verberne
Treasurer
Hello everybody! My name is Wieger Verberne and I am the Treasurer in the XXXIInd STAR Board. I am 24 years old and currently in my fifth year at RSM. In my first year I joined the student fraternity RSC where I had several unforgettable years. Nevertheless, now that I am in the final phase of my studies (Master in Finance & Investments), I am ready for a new challenge. A STAR board year is splendidly suited to bring theory into practice. Working a whole year intensively with my fellow board members, setting goals and achieving them while having fun together is great in my opinion. Furthermore, the social aspect of the interaction with other STAR members is appealing to me. As a treasurer, my main responsibility is to safeguard the financial continuity of STAR. Managing the budget of the entire association allows me to actively involved in more than 30 committees and all the Master Study Clubs. What's more, I will be in contact with different stakeholders of STAR such as Erasmus Trustfonds and Rotterdam School of Management.
STAR has made a lot of progress in recent years in becoming a really professional organization with a lot of members, committees and a high budget. Leading this organization in time of financial crisis will be quite a challenge but also a great experience. I look forward to an enlightening and enjoyable year. Together with my fellow board members, I am determined to turn this year into a huge success and take the association to the next level!
Marcelle Derksen
Commissioner of External Affairs
Hi! My name is Marcelle Derksen, 20 years old, and currently the Commissioner of External Affairs of the XXXIInd STAR board. Three years ago, I started my study in International Business Administration at RSM. I enjoyed being active and thus I joined the fraternity R.S.V. Sanctus Laurentius during my first year. A year later, I also became active at STAR by joining the IBA Study Trip Committee, which organized the memorable Study Trip to Hong Kong. In my third year, I went on an exchange to Mexico for six months. Upon return I found my next challenge in the International Research Project. In between exams, I love to travel, play tennis and to dance as well as to spend time with friends and family. Inspired by its members and the many events at STAR, I am glad to be part of this XXXIInd STAR board. As the Commissioner of External Affairs, I will be responsible for company relations as well as guiding and assisting all commercials in a joint effort to make great STAR activities financially possible. Together with my fellow board members I look forward to offering you at STAR an open and social learning place, where you can have a great time by either organizing or participating in STAR's many academic and social activities. Our door is always open to combining efforts in achieving another great year at STAR!
Stefan Kleinrouweler
Commissioner of Marketing & PR
Hi, I am Stefan Kleinrouweler and I am the Commissioner of Marketing & PR in the XXXIInd STAR Board. I am 21 years old and I have been a Business Administration student at the RSM Erasmus University since 2006. Before applying for STAR, I was in some committees at my fraternity R.S.V. Sanctus Laurentius, which I joined during my first year. Additionally I have also been active at Rotterdam School of Management as an Ambassador for the RSM. I had to travel all over the country to provide information about the RSM and Business Administration to high school students as well as guide them in making the right decision for their future field of study. Searching for even greater and more challenging tasks, I was fascinated with all the challenging possibilities STAR has to offer such as working with a group of inspiring people. The eagerness to develop myself and to help others grow to their full potential made me apply for a position within the STAR Board. As the Commissioner of Marketing I will be responsible for making long-term strategic decisions regarding the overall image of STAR.
Laura Driebeek
Commissioner of Public Affairs
Hi! My name is Laura Driebeek and I am 24 years old. Before coming to Rotterdam, I completed my Bachelor International Economics and Business in Groningen. After my exchange in Australia, I decided that I was up for something new and thus decided to do my masters Finance & Investments at the Rotterdam School of Management. In November I became active at STAR as it was a perfect opportunity to get acquainted with a large diverse group of students and to develop myself even more. That is the reason I joined the International Business Project Committee where we organized an amazing case competition in Dubai. After eight months, I realized that I was up for a major challenge and decided to apply for the XXXIInd STAR board. A board year would provide me the perfect opportunity to help the active members reach their personal goals as well as working closely with other eight inspiring persons. As the Commissioner of Public Affairs, I will be in charge of maintaining and broadening the network of STAR which consists of embassies, chambers of commerce, the city of Rotterdam, EUR and RSM personnel and illustrious speakers from all over the world. I really look forward to a great year full of challenges and new experiences together with my board and of course all our active members. Besides STAR, I like travelling, reading, skiing and spending time with my friends.
Edwin Moerland
Commissioner of Human Resource Management & IT
My name is Edwin Moerland and this year I am responsible for HR and IT within STAR. I am 21 years old and in the 4th year of my study International Business Administration. As my study was going really well, I wanted to develop myself further as well as to meet new people. That is the reason I decided to become active at STAR. After various committees such as the IBA Introduction Weekend, Race of the Classics and the Ski-Trip, I encountered a new challenge this year, namely, being part of the XXXIInd STAR Board. As the Commissioner of HRM & IT officer, my aim is to extend the learning experience of active members at STAR and to improve STAR's HR management on a strategic level. Another part of my function entails working on improving the current IT-structure of STAR where possible and keeping all the technology up-to-date. In my spare time I enjoy playing tennis, traveling and reading. Together with the rest of the XXXIInd Board I look forward to working together with all (active) members and making this a great year!
Sanne Vrijland Project Manager
My name is Sanne Vrijland and I am currently in my fourth year of Business Administration. I am the new Project Manager of the XXXIInd STAR board, meaning that I am responsible for guiding and supervising most of the committees within STAR. When I started studying and living in Rotterdam three years ago, I joined the fraternity R.S.V. Sanctus Laurentius. After a year of partying and discovering Rotterdam, I wanted to broaden my horizon. I became a member of STAR as the people and the challenge of organizing activities beside my study attracted me. I joined the Community Development National Team. This committee gives students the opportunity to do something good for the society. It is really rewarding to see that as a student you can enrich the lives of other people.
A year later, I joined STAR International Business Study as a participant. Participating in IBS was a great experience as we went to Vietnam to do research for Dutch companies. Joining the STAR board makes my "STAR-career" complete! Beside STAR I love travelling, chilling out with my friends, snowboarding and playing tennis now and then.
I really look forward to the coming year and I hope our 32nd Board will contribute to the great STAR experience for every student. I hope to see you all soon!
